Booker Prize 2023: Rachel Kushner and Percival Everett Make the Shortlist

Acclaimed authors Rachel Kushner and Percival Everett are among the six finalists for the 2023 Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world.

The Booker Prize is awarded annually to the best original novel written in English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

The six shortlisted authors were selected from a longlist of 13 by a panel of five judges. Chair of the judges Neil MacGregor said, “These are books that offer a remarkable range of voices and perspectives. They ask big questions and take risks. They explore the past, illuminate the present, and speculate about the future.”

Rachel Kushner's The Flamethrowers is set in New York City in the 1970s and follows the story of a young woman who becomes involved in the city's radical art scene. Percival Everett's The Trees is a satirical novel about a black man who is lynched and then returns to life as a ghost.

The other shortlisted authors are Alan Garner for Treacle Walker, Shehan Karunatilaka for The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, Marieke Lucas Rijneveld for My Heart, and Elizabeth Strout for Oh William!

The winner of the 2023 Booker Prize will be announced on October 17.
