Mississippi State Fires Football Coach Zach Arnett

Zach Arnett, who has been the Bulldogs' coach for less than one season, was fired on Monday.

Athletic director Zac Selmon announced the decision, which comes after Mississippi State finished the regular season with a 4-8 record.

Arnett, 37, was hired in December 2022 after spending the previous four seasons as the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State. He was the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator from 2018-2021, and he was promoted to head coach after Mike Leach died in December 2022.

Mississippi State finished the 2023 regular season with a 4-8 record, including a 2-6 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs lost their final four games of the season, including a 24-22 loss to rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl.

Arnett's firing comes as a surprise, as he was considered to be a rising star in the coaching ranks. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award, which is given to the nation's top assistant coach, in 2021.

Mississippi State will now begin a search for a new head coach. The Bulldogs are expected to hire a coach who can bring stability to the program and help them compete for championships.
